This will be a public release. You might have to go to Microsoft.com/downloads to
get it. I am not sure if it will show up as an automatic update. In the past it was
separate. There is a slightly buggy release out now, but I would avoid it. The one
out now expires in June and has to be removed before putting the final release on.
And of course you don't want to be messing around with something that isn't quite
ready, lest you end up mad as M.S. for "Forcing you to put this on your machine when
it wasn't ready". Of course that last bit was meant to be sarcastic.

Hi Charlie
I'm not sure that you went to the link I gave. This is not a buggy release,
but is the final RTM release, in other words it is now being sent to manufacturers
to install on new machines. Microsoft have stated that it will be available for download
to current Vista users in mid-March.
The releases you are referring to are Sp1 RC and Sp1 RC (Refresh).
Cheers,
Peter

Sorry to say but the RTM release is buggy. As the article states, there are driver
issues with the release. That's the reason for the delay to the public.
Besides the words "Microsoft" and "Buggy" have always been associated together.

You state as a matter of fact "Sorry to say but the RTM release is buggy". You have
tested this, have you, as a recipient manufacturer? If not, I fail to see how you
have arrived at that conclusion.
An RTM copy is not a beta copy nor a release candidate. There seems to be some misunderstanding
here. The RTM copy of Vista Sp1, is a complete copy of Vista with Sp1 integrated.
This is installed on new PCs (hence the designation Release to Manufacturing), burnt
to disk and issued with new PCs as OEM disks.
Always some weeks later, Microsoft burns the RTM to disk, boxes it (taking the designation
'Gold'), and retail it as 'Vista Sp1' in shops.
Sp1 as a download upgrade is a separate matter for current Vista users. This is not
a complete copy of the new OS, Vista Sp1, but the necessary code to upgrade existing
Vistas to Vista Sp1 standard. That will be available mid-March, by which time new
PCs will be available loaded with Vista Sp1 OEM.
If you read the links carefully again you will see that some driver incompatibility
caused the delay of the RTM, which has now been sorted out. This is always a problem
because hardware manufacturers are reluctant to re-write driver code based on Beta,
Release Candidate 1, and subsequent release candidates. They tend to hang back to
the last minute waiting for the final RTM copy. For that reason, RTM copies are released
to hardware manufacturers some time before general release so that they can work
out any incompatibility issues or bugs in the drivers.

I would really like to know where they are getting it. Microsoft didn't start the
manufacturing of the RTM till yesterday 2/7/08. If you are talking about the sp1
RC that is only a release CANDIDATE and is not the final release. I am a Microsoft
Partner and have no access to it. None of our local stores have it. The RC is time
limited and will not work past june. Give me an addy where you are getting it. You
were right as to the March release date. If someone is putting something on NEW machines
they probably are not authourized.

I have viewed a site that gives you info on how to look in your registry to prove
that your SP1 RC is actually the RTM.This proves nothing. I would refer you to another
article. http://www.informationweek.com/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206104469
This shows that even the RTM will have a few device bugs. Just one of the big reasons
people end up Trash Talking MS is because they always have to try to go through some
cheat or back door to get something sooner or for free and then when it fails they
go around crying about it.

Why the rush ?
MS products rarely work properly first time around. Let the lemmings find all the
bugs, then install the SP (if you really need it) some 6 months later when most of
them have been ironed out.
[For operating systems, instead of "6 months" wait "36 months"]

Microsoft has clarified why the general release of Sp1 has been delayed, it was not
because of drivers.
The RTM released on 4 Feb, Microsoft makes clear, is the final issue.
See http://tinyurl.com/2dlmlc posted Monday, 11 Feb.
Mike Nash, of the Vista development team, has categorically stated that:
I want to be super-clear on one point: Windows Vista SP1 is final. It has been
fully released to manufacturing and we do not plan to make any changes to the SP1
code prior to public availability.

I'm not going to call you or you info a liar. I can forward you e-mail and you can
show me yours ....
I just talked for 3 hours with M.S. support and in the discussion this was covered.
I was told that they were indeed going to send out the existing SP1 RTM as final
"IN ITS BUBBY CONDITION". That they did delay it for a short time to put in a failsafe
that if it detected the faulty drivers or hardware it would fail the install. Who
is correct and who is not telling you the truth? Big Corps. are going to tell you
what you want to hear. I myself will not put on SP1 until it is offered to me as
a final product ready for distribution.

This is getting too ridiculous for words! I began this thread simply by saying that
Vista Sp1 RTM was released to manufacturing and will be available for download to
existing users in mid-March.
The information is from Mike Nash, Microsoft's Windows Project Manager for Vista Sp1.
If you choose to disbelieve him, that is your concern, but please do not imply that
I am a liar. I could not care less whether you will upgrade to Sp1 or not. That is
entirely a matter for you. If you feel so bad about Vista there are other operating
systems readily. available.

Sure, but by propogating this sort of pre-news news on public forums you unwittingly
encourage the lemmings to install stuff they almost certainly don't need and which
may well (history says) screw up their systems. Look back at the SPI "bulge" in posts
in the XP forum to see what I mean.
Look, I truly don't mean to get heavy about this but any discussion on this topic
ought really to carry a clear health warning eg "Unless you have specific problems
you know SP1 will fix, don't even think of installing it for 6 months after MS say
its ready, and then only if you are sure you need to". After 6 months there may be
enough knowledge "out there" (on forums like this one) to help folk with the problems
it brings.
If this advice were followed for all MS updates the world in general would be a better
place. That includes updates to Operating Systems, but in that case I would extend
the period from 6 months to 2 years :-))))

Quoting you:

Aside from your dismissive lemmings for your fellow posters, it isn't possible
for anyone to install Vista Sp1 RTM other than recipient manufacturers, or at least
it wasn't when I first posted. All that 'lemmings' can install is Sp1 Release Candidate
1 and RC1 Refresh 2, a quite pointless exercise since both are now obsolete. From
the very beginning I clearly said that Sp1 would be available for download to existing
Vista users in mid-March.
As for pre-news news, I posted on 5 February, the day after Microsoft officially
made the announcement, giving a direct link to that announcement. I evidently made
the mistake of thinking that official news of Sp1 might be of interest to Vista users.
Frankly, I see no point in discussing this further.
