Easy Transfer Cable: Must it be Vista-certified?

I'm looking to transfer a boatload of data files to my new Vista computer (from an
XP computer) using the Easy Transfer Wizard.
I've seen older transfer cables that can work with XP, but Microsoft blathers on
about making sure that the transfer cable is "certified" for Vista.
Does anyone know whether this is a real requirement or just a gimmick? I can buy
an older transfer cable for less money than one that's "Vista certified," but I don't
want to purchase something and not be able to use it.
Thanks for your help.

I would buy the "Vista certified" to be safe.
Then again you can use a router or a network switch and do the same thing.
Good luck!

I didn't know I could do it through my router. Is it easy? (I'd rather not have to
set up a whole network to do this.)
Is there a reference you can point me to?
Thanks!

Lots of options to transfer data
Connect the two computers using a network/RJ45/Ethernet crossover cable and set up
a network on both computers
Connect both PCs to a router and set up a network with file sharing (both computers
could then use the internet)
Transfer to an external hard disk (usefull for keeping backups in the future)
Copy everything to DVDs. (depends on how much data you have)
Transferring settings isn't that easy - it will depend on what settings you mean.
Microsoft do a guide here
