Vista hangs.

Ok, recently something fell onto my computer (cheap computer desk), and after that
happened it started freezing. While the freezing has stopped with a chkdsk runthrough
I am getting slowdowns in my startup, and weird hanging problems. I have trouble
getting some programs to close. I will try to end them in program manager, and it
does nothing. When this happens, I also have problems OPENING things. Anyone have
any ideas?

If the falling object hit your keyboard, you may have a stuck key or broken keyboard.
See if you can use (borrow) a different keyboard and maybe problem will go away.
If not, uh, ? Sorry.

It could be anything.
You are going to have to physically look inside the tower to see if anything is loose.
A good place to start is the RAM. One or more sticks of RAM could have fallen out
or come loose. Re-seat them and try using the system.
Another problem could be the heatsink/fan on the processor.
Look to see if the fan was knocked off or the heatsink had jarred loose.
Yet another is the hard drive. The mishap could have permanently damaged the internals
of the hard drive.
The list can go on.
As I said, the mishap could have damaged anything.
Good luck!

When that happened I popped my computer open to take the chance to fix some other
annoyances. My mobo wasn't seated properly so a nudge would make it power off from
it shorting or something. I cleaned all my fans, replaced my thermal paste with AS5
(had some lying around), etc... etc... I think it might be my HDD drive. So I'm running
a bunch of diangostics on it, hoping that might shed some light. I will also try
a Vista repair install on it to see if that might fix the app hangs.

Wow, it looks like you might have messed up your PC.
Or like other Vista users, that is the Vista experience. Hey, you wanted the new
OS with the great features that cost a computer an arm and a leg, or in this case...a
new CPU and two bars of RAM--not to mention almost all of your Hard Disk Space.
Recommendations:
1. Get a MAC
-or if you do need a PC-
2. Get a Pentium 2 or 3 with Windows 95 installed.

I can't see paying twice the money for JUST ANOTHER PC. And that is all a Mac is
now that they have gone Intel inside. Most of the Mac users I know are using Vista
also as it is by far a Superior OS. As far as the Vista experience goes, if people
wouldn't put a bunch of 3rd party garbage on their machine, for the most part they
would run just fine. Kinda of like Macs not having a bunch of 3rd. party garbage
available to choose from Hu? Of course you have to consider why Bill bailed out Apple
Sauce to begin with. I think it has something to do with being in control of your
own competition.

Well, I'm glad my thread turned into a Mac flamewar. :)
Anyway, my computer is back to normal. Apparently, a system restore fixed it all
somehow? I don't know, but it's back to my normal speeds.
