cannot install flash

I tried to view a video on youtube and was met with "Hello, you either have JavaScript
turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.
But I have java turned on and am up to date with Flash version 9. I uininstalled
and tried to download flash again but it will not install. Only once did i get the
dialogue box asking me to click to install. I did but nothing happened. Task manager
says it is running. I tried turning off firewall
It is the same problem as at http://au.answers.yahoo.com/answers2/frontend.php/question?qid=20071007184042AAu77dZ
but there must be a way to resolve it while using IE

The Adobe Flash Player uninstaller is needed for new version of Flash. Google will
lead you to it.

I ran the uninstaller but still flash would not install. So for anyone with the same
problem I had to run the uninstaller and then get a standalone download of flash
from http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/flash.html

Here is what fixed mine on vista
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/internet/firefox/install-flash-plugin-manually-in-firefox-on-vista/
follow th edirections and ignore the stuff about firefox. Simply download the core
files... change it to a zip by a simple rename...
open the unzipped folder and right click on the flash application.
Choose "run as administrator"
it will now run and properly install. :)

Even though I can now view youtube I still get the message :-
"Hello, you either have JavaScript
turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player."
just before the viewer opens
