Screen brightness adjustment program wanted!

One thing I really like about my laptop is that is has a button you can press that
immediately darkens the screen to a preset level. It is very useful indeed, particularly
if you suddenly have to do a lot of word processing (or anything that involves using
a lot of bright white backgrounds). I was wondering if anyone knows of any available
program that I could install that would also allow me to do this on the desktop PC?
The latter has programmable keys in the keyboard, and both are running Vista. Only
other option at the moment seems to be a new pair of sunglasses.

The monitor attached to your desktop probably has some controls of its own - usually
buttons on the front.
They usually do have their own controls but, if not, right click on your desktop,
then on the Settings tab, then on the Advanced button. Have a delve around the tabs
- what you get depends on your video card, and be careful not to alter settings like
refresh rate which could result in no usable display at all ! Stick to monitor brightness,
colour and contrast adjustments.

Yes, the monitor does have settings, and it is possible of course to go into the
Nvidia Control Panel as well, but this is too fiddly to do every time and I am really
looking for something really easy that can be controlled toggling by pressing a key
on or off.

Laptop PC manufacturers can do this because they know which monitor they have to
manage - its built-in.
Desktop PC manufacturers cannot, for obvious reasons, and there clearly isn't enough
demand for anyone to bother writing code to do this.
Time to polish up your programming skills . . . . :-)

The only real reason that feature is on Laptops is to give a User more battery life.
Since Desktop PCs don't have Batteries to worry about there was never a need for
a Button to Dim the Monitor.

Thanks for your replies. Actually, I’m surprised nobody ever talks about this subject.
Unlike CRT, modern TFT screens are so bright that I for one get eyestrain if I have
to a lot of writing. Trouble is, for all other use, gaming, looking at photos, and
web pages, full brightness is great, it’s just that, like I say, when you suddenly
switch to something like the word processor or a spreadsheet, the brightness is far
too strong , (well, for me anyway), though I guess this only affects home PCs, as
in most workplace computers the brightness is permanently turned down. Still, if
somebody ever comes up with such a program I would among the first to get it!

An anti-glare cover for the monitor would be just as effective - and as easy to operate
as you seek :-)
I expect your local computer store has them, and Google found lots, for instance . . .

I found this thread while searching for a dimmer similar to the Mac program "Shades"
for when I run Vista on my iMac. Since there doesn't seem to be any similar program
out there, I created one yesterday. It's currently set to dim by a set amount (20%)
but I'll post an updated version in a week or so that allows you to control the dimmer.
It's a free program I call "VistaShades" and you can download it at http://vistashades.com
. Hope this helps some of you experiencing brightness issues.
