Vista is not putting those icons in your notification area. If all you have is a
standard 104-key keyboard, you should not be seeing them. It’s likely that you have
an aftermarket keyboard with special keys for email, or multimedia, or something
else like that. If you have a keyboard like this, there will be software for it installed
somewhere on your computer. You would need to find it and change its behavior.
If you don’t know where they are coming from, you should still be able to get rid
of them, or at least, get them out of your way. First, you must have your taskbar
unlocked. This is done with a right-click on any empty area of the taskbar. There
should be no checkmark next to the "Lock the taskbar" entry in the context menu.
Right-click on the taskbar and select Properties. This will open a property sheet
for the taskbar.
Select the Notification Area tab.
In the Icons frame, select Customize.
In the list that appears, find your offending icons. Under "Behavior," select "Hide"
This will not completely eliminate the offending icons, but it will move them permanently
to the out-of-view part of the notification area, and they should be less irritating.
