What would cause my system restore points to disappear?
I have plenty of disk space.

Have you recently turned off system restore?
If you have, this would clear all restore points.

Nope. In fact, it created a restore point today, but all the others are gone.

Check the specs. on your restore. You can set (and it may have) a limited amount
of space reserved for restore points and also time limitations. Also there has been
a few instances where VISTA has a mind of it's own and resets everything. And you
prob. won't like what has been changed. This is one of the few items that I dislike
about Vista. I know of no fix YET for this other than a reinstall. But don't go that
for yet lets see if you can get it corrected first.

You are going to have to do this through Regedit. Go to : Start/run type in regedit.
this will start your registry editor. Open Computer/Hkey_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.
All of this on the left side. Click on SystemRestore on the left side. On the right
you should see some information. Look for "RPGlobalInterval" and to the right of
that you should see some numbers. If in the parentheses you see (86400) that is the
number of seconds in a day. That says that your machine will make a automatic restore
point every day, 24 hours, 86400. Get the point. To change it double click on "RPGlobalInterval"
and a window will open. change the BASE setting to decimal if it is not. Then in
the window type in the amount of SECONDS you wish to use for this setting. Changing
"RPLifeInterval" in a like manner sets how long the computer keeps the file, but
only to a point the computer will only use 15% of your hard drive and will start
to drop off the oldest restore point as new ones are made. This looks scary. It,
if not followed to the letter can destroy WINDOWS. If you get used to it, it is simple
and straight forward.
To change the amount of space on the hard drive it uses I am going to refer you to
the quick link bellow. And remember if at any time it gets turned off totally All
restore points are immediately lost.

Vista has taken many of the more simple methods away from the user. They are trying
to become more like Apple-sauce in this. The only suggestion I can give at this point
is to make sure your restore is indeed turned on NOW! You may wish to look here in
Annoyances under articles at "registry tips". then do a little web searching on using
the registry, just to get familiar with the language used. I could try to walk you
through it step by step. That could take quite some time. Were you able to getting
regedit running to Begin with? Let me know if I can help. And yes it is easy to not
remember what it was like as a beginner so please forgive..

I only know 2 ways you can lose all your previous Restore points in Vista:
1. If you have a dual-boot system they get lost everytime you start the PC, although
there is a fix for this.
2. If you turn Restore off, then turn it on again.
You appear at least to have neither of these conditions, so on the face of it I am
stumped !
However there's a simple guide to turning Restore on and off (section titled Here's
How) here.
You may care to read right through the document I linked to above - and some of the
links within it - it will increase your understanding through reasonably plain English
and may help you to work out what's going on.
Good luck.

There exists a problem that I spend about 6 hours a week discussing with M.S. Eng.
dept. that under certain conditions the system erratically and arbitrarily goes in
and changes many if not all settings. Really quite mind blowing. Like the problem
they have with the buggy SP1 they actually had to go in and make SP, not able to
load on systems that had those certain characteristics. This is a real thing and
I know it will get worked out. Yes, they have a fix for things like folder settings
that go crazy, but on these systems that lasts about a week and they go crazy again.
Wee don't think it's a virus either. A virus would be either instantaneous or at
regular intervals. This is not the case. It always seems to happen just before a
crash also. If you mite have some in-site poss. we could get a thread going at M.S.
about it.

Who cares.....System restore works like crap anyway. Use a different program like
goback instead.
