I won't say anything bad yet. Including your caution. I've been waiting the real deal! It took nearly an hour for the 64 bit ver. to complete, including 3 restarts for 3 sections. All very smooth. So far have lost nothing. Small improvements all around speed. Had faster hook up with the wifi, but of course it can't help wifi speeds. I don't think anyway. MS D/L site was very fast, of course I was there minutes after it was released. I Feel encouraged. All that and the stock market up 400 pts too WOW~

Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues; supporting new types of hardware; and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also will continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone version can be installed on systems with any of the following language versions: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional). So says MS!! Wave0 = Only 5 languages JAP-FRE-SPA-ENG-GER Wave1 = 36 langues (available to download on april 9) HOW ABOUT WAITING TO APRIL 9th?

There is one, and only one, thing I want to know first: is there any chance it'll fix the absurd problem re disappearing DVD/CD drives?!

There are too many people in the world who look, but do not see; listen, but do not hear; acknowledge, but do not understand; speak when they have nothing to say.

I will not offer false hopes. on the other hand this is a major overhaul including how it "accesses drives" how it copy's and moves files and folders. The operational changes are almost like a new OS. I would encourage backing up any data files and going for it. **Make sure you have the pre-requisite updates installed first** Take a little time to D/L and read the "Notable changes in Windows Vista SP1" pdf first. READ THE DESTRUCTIONS first! Considering that you stated you drive is coming and going makes me want to believe there is another program taking control and fighting with Vista. This has been one of the common things seen in Vista. Other vendors thinking they know more instead of following Ms's rules.

When did you put it on. This is the official release and it is supposed to fix that specifically. If you have any version before 10:00 AM Mountain time. 3/18/08 try removing it, make sure you have the prerequisite updates and try the new and final version. In the mean time I will look up the old standard fixes for that issue for you.

The most common answer I have found is that "as usual" third party software such as "Ulead Straight to disc SDK" seems to cause the problem and removal of them fixes it. Another answer I have viewed but not tried is on your IDE controller in Devices change it to ultra dma 2 mode. Then put in the OFFICIAL release of SP1. Again they have rewritten how file transfer and drives are handled now. that is one of the big changes.
