Virtual Device Driver

When installing some older software and even doing the right-click option I continued
to received this error message. I also tried Run as Adm with no luck.
"SYSTEM/currentcontrolset/virtualdevicedrivers/ VDD. Virtual device driver format
in the registry is in valid "
The strange thing is I had already installed it on another PC using Vista Home Premium
also.
How do I bypass this message?
Thanks.

If you haven't already been there check out the link below. Also is there any chance
this is software that originally needed a file with a name like VBRUN100.DLL or VBRUN300.DLL?
These will are flaky if Even able to run on Vista.

Charlies,
I have neither of those files on this PC. Don't know abut the eMachine. Don't you
think that if those files were required I would get a message saying they were needed?
If so I'm sure I could find them someplace from someone.
I also checked out the Microsoft link you provided. If it were you would you edit
the Registry or give it up and go buy current software?
The thing that aggravates me is that I was able to install all of those programs
on the other Vista eMachine.
Thanks for the help.
Seems thing would be a little consistent?

It is ultimately up to you! You need to evaluate how old the software is. You really
want to TRY to talk to someone that is involved with that particular software to
see if they might provide an update of suggestion (and not just a distributor). I
could post your dilemma on the MS forums, but you can do that I would assume. I am
a big fan of tweaking the registry, but this is one time I would hold off. The registry
is not a place to be guessing. I will look around some more for you.

As far as the VBRUN files, Some vendors provided them others didn't. It is probable
that if you needed them the software wouldn't be compatible anyway. What is bothering
me is you said you got it to work on one machine. Have you turned anything off in
MSCONFIG? This is where VxD files load (similar to VDD's). On the other hand the
older software loaded it VDD's in the System.ini which is not used anymore. You might
try copying the System.ini of the machine that is running the software to you problem
machine. You can manually enter most of this information into the Program by r. clicking
on the icon then Properties/compatibility. I'm wondering did you already have this
program installed then later install Vista. That would explain why it already had
it's properties defined somewhere. I don't have your machine to look at so I will
offer you a couple of other places to look, to see if it better fits your situation.

Charlie,
I will check out the links you provided. Thanks.
Just a little history. I had a 9 month old eMachine that came with Vista Home Premium
installed. But the hard drive went bad and I was afraid that Gateway wouldn't stand
behind it but that proved to be false. They were great. I panicked and went out and
bought this Lenovo with Vista Home Premium installed. I didn't expect the fast turn
around from Gateway, thus the reason for 2 PC's. Just double trouble right now.
No, I didn't mess with the System.ini.
Sorry, but I don't quite understand what you mean about:You can manually enter most
of this information into the Program by r. clicking on the icon then Properties/compatibility.

Either in "Prograns" and whatever program you choose or on a desktop Icon, Right
click then choose the compatibility tab at the top. From there you can get in depth
settings that used to be installed by the software. Now that I know a little more
about you machine and situation, I'm susre you have already done so, but I have to
ask. Did you try to restart your machine and then re-install the program? You don't
sound like an ameture so if I get too far ahead of you YELL at me! Virtual settings
& devices should be installed by the software. You may want to try to duplicat the
regisrty setting that you first mentioned from what the working machne has to that
of the other none coaperative machine. ONLY DOCUMENT every last letter and move you
make. Also back up the registry before you modify it. Also these registry CLEANERS
are the worst thing you can put on a Vista machine. There are empty keys etc that
Vista needs and they just go in and wipe them out. And if they did any good in Win
XP it was so slight, you couldn't measure it.
