I have a question about my mail when i go to open an attachment i get a pop up that said this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. creat an association in the set associations control panel how would i do this? mind you i am not that good on the computer

That usually means you don't have a program installed capable of opening the file.
What is the filetype?

Email file attachments are still the #1 way viruses and other malware are spread.

Hopefully you have a top-notch, fully updated antivirus program installed and set 
to scan your email, AND hopefully you are operating your computer using a User-level 
account and not a Computer Administrator-level account.

I agree with KeithT regarding your most likely not having a program installed capable 
of opening the file attachment.  If you Google the file extension (the part of the 
fiel name after the "dot") you'll be able to ascertain which program is need.  If 
it's a Microsoft Office program, there are free downloadable "viewer" programs at 
Microsoft.com.  For example, here's the Word viewer:
