Major Vista upgrade but not SP1?

Every morning I switch on my Vista Home Premium machine, in my study, then go downstairs
for breakfast. So I do not see what happens at first bootup. When I return, some
20 minutes later, the machine is ready to use.
Except this morning: 10th April 07:00 GMT
When I returned to the machine is was updating 3 of 3; this took another few minutes;
25 minutes to update. When I looked in System Restore all my recent restores have
gone and my Kasperskey Anti-Virus went into full scan as it said my machine had not
been scanned.
Right clicking on My Computer showed the OS as Vista Home Premium but no memtion
of SP1.
What was this major update, if not SP1, and why should it wipe all my restores and
trigger Kaspersky to do a full scan?

Yesterday Windows did send out a update that was "Major: enough that it did the 1-2-3
stage routine after install. Not to worry.

Thank you for your reply.
But why would it remove all my previous Restore Points?

I can only guess on the restore points issue. I believe it would be an issue of corrupting
the entire system if you tried to restore to a point before this update.

The exact same thing happened to me. I no longer have any restore points previous
to April 8. The update also set off a antivirus scan (McAfee). I got the black
screen after reboot for a very long time. More than a half hour. I finally did a
hard shutdown, started up again, got a message saying it was updating stage 3 and
to not turn off the computer. Everything finished OK.
My computer doesn't show SP1. I have had Vista for a year and have done all the
critical updates and many of the important updates. This is the first time there
has been a glitch. Was it caused by my impatience? Or did my computer get stuck?
It was very quiet before I did the hard shutdown.

Just read this post and had a fit of the vapours as I'd updated the same as you but
it went OK and no problem re-booting and I thought no more about it. I've just checked
my system restore points and they are all intact - phew. I use Avast anti-virus
and it wasn't triggered by the updates. I wonder if I've just been lucky.

I just checked mine for grins and it had been turned off and all points gone. This
even help me catch a potential problem. I am letting MS know right away.

Though I find that Quite disconcerting, I have seen that happen. I think there are
at least a couple of people who gave up too early, but I may have done so also in
those circumstances. Thank you for letting me know that even I need to be just a
little more patient sometimes.
