Did you by any chance unplug the drive without using the "safely remove hardware"
icon in the taskbar?
If so, some or all of your files may be corrupt.

Have you tried the Seagate site, especially the knowledge base?

Also look to see if there is a very small MICRO switch on the drive itself. I have three different brands and they all have Lock Switch on them. They are easy to overlook.

THX for the reply,i've search all over the USB external drive & only switches or plugins are power switch,USB plugin,& an on/off switch....also went to Seagate to see if they could help.but they didn't have any info regarding write protection for there hard drives.it seems something happened when i lost some data on my C drive & reloaded my backup from the F drive to get back the data.I still don't understand how a hard drive can get write protected?

THX,to all who responded,i have finally found the answer to removing write protection....!the link will show xp but works for vista..........http://www.accessdata.com/media/en_US/print/papers/wp.USB_Write_Protect.en_us.pdf............. its a pdf file so you will need an adobe reader.also its a registry modification so make sure you do a restore point 1st.it's simple & works,my F drive is now free from write protection.
