Can't start Task Manager, no way to kill process

When Vista gets locked up by a rogue process, I would normally start the Task Manager
to kill the process. Incredibly, this often isn't possible: Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing,
and Start Menu/Run.../taskmgr also does nothing.

How do I kill a process if Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work, and there's no way to launch
the Task Manager? This makes no sense -- I have to reboot the whole machine every
time Firefox hits a plug-in it can't cope with?

Thanks if you can help...

Hi Bathsheba,

You can press Ctlr+Shift+Esc instead to open Task Manager.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

There are a couple of known Trojans that will disable it. Also some other process
may have disabled it.
There is a MS KB for to repair this, I just can't find it right now. If you go looking
make sure you are searching the one for Vista as the other versions are probably
compatible.

Bathsheba,

If you cannot get Task Manager to run, then this tutorial will show you how to get
enable it again.

Taskmgr is not disabled on my system, the problem is that it won't start when the
system is locked up in certain ways. It looks like it takes a lot of resources to
launch, and when they aren't there Vista does not give it enough priority to run.
I don't really know anything about it, just saying that's what it looks like.

FWIW, I downloaded the KillProcess app which is a lot smaller. I also learned about
the tasklist and taskkill DOS commands, which could help if there's enough slack
available to start a DOS window.

Thanks anyway...

I found Shawn's replies using the Start, Run and Regedit command to access the Registry Editor in order to repair a "hide and seek" Task Manager very informative and interesting. I had the same problem with the Task Manager. It did a disappearing trick on me. After searching the net I came upon a couple of websites, which contain nearly as helpful information as one presented by Shawn, at: http:///www.vistax64.com/tutorial/ 1033275-task-manager-enable-disable.html. Glance at these two at: http://www.taskmanagerfix.com/ and also check: http://www.pchell.lcom/support/taskmanagerdisabled.shtml. With the info from both websites and of course the one Shawn showed us, I fine tuned my task manager and now it is running like a cheetah! Thanx a lot.

Why dont you try checking for simple typos before making nasty snide comments about someone trying to help? I fixed the PC Hell link, its pretty good: http://www.pchell.com/support/taskmanagerdisabled.shtml As to the other one, that thread has been removed, certainly not the posters fault.

I appreciate your civil, instructive and educated reply. It has class, kels69! Like a true scholar, you searched and found the source of knowledge. I wish everyone would follow your example. I do.
