My PC has died. I've looked on the Microsoft website and living up to its usual useful
self can not find the answer to my problem.
How do I deactivate my genuine copy of Vista then install it on a 2nd PC?

The information you need is easily found, by going to this MS document:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/62088be6-3538-46a6-99fb-05e74aeb48b51033.mspx
While there, click on "Will I ever need...".

Hi Colin,
If you have a Retail or Express Vista installation DVD and the product key number
for it, then you can install it on another computer since it no longer available
on the other computer. You will most likely need to do a phone activation to let
MS know that it is not being install on more than one computer. This tutorial will
show you how to do a phone activation if needed.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
There are no dumb questions, just the people that do not ask them.

You might if you are really blesses by the Blarney stone, be able to convince the
real person over the phone that you tried to build a Vista compatible machine and
it just didn't work out and had to install it on a new machine, but I get away with
)&(^&* that no real person should be able to get away with. Talk sense to the person
on the other end of the line and don't try to talk crap and they will probably let
you do it. Be intelligent without a bunch of trash talk. MS is not a bunch of trolls
living under a bridge waiting to attack you.
