Could someone tell me if it is possible to clone laptop insternal hard drive to usb external hard drive. The internal has 2 partitions the C drive and D drive that has all of the restore items. The reason I am asking is Dell sent me a new hard drive for laptop that has all of the usual stuff that is factorey installed since I had to virtually wipe out the one in my computer because of issues. I was hoping to be able to clone the new one to external hard drive in case this happended again. Before problem started I right clicked and sent everything to external but when issues arose it did not work when I tried to reinstall from the external Thanks

The easiest way is to use partition cloning software such as that by Acronis. I would get hold of another laptop hard drive and an external USB caddy (sometimes you can buy the drive already in the caddy). Clone your laptop drive partitions to the external - then if the drive fails, simply swap the one in your laptop for the one in the caddy, and it will work. Then you can place the non-working one in the caddy and erase the partitions ready to accept a clone of your newly installed drive.
