Sound settings keep resetting

I have verified that it is not my headphones responsilbe for this problem as they
have worked on other computers running on vista, but everytime I plug them into mine
it configures the sound options such that I can't hear anything unless it's running
in Windows Media Player. Does anyone have any knowledge of this particular problem?

A lot of things can cause that. You say MP plays fine without any assistance? R.
click on the 'Volume' speaker in your icon tray (lower right corner). click on properties
and see what your settings look like there. If you have something different than
your basic built in to the motherboard sound (an add on sound card) you need to find
its audio setup/mixer to check the settings there. also if you run the DirectX Diagnostic
you can really test things out and find deeper problems there.

This info won't help issues wiht your sound card, but it is the best guide to Vista
and how it deals with sound.
