Can't pick default apps

I'm using Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I have Administrator rights—but for some reason,
Vista has stopped letting me choose default apps for file types.
I right-click a file that can be opened (.txt, for example). The "Open With" window
appears, showing the currently-associated app and (usually) a couple of other choices.
I click Browse and select another app—but then, when I click OK and return to the
"Open With" window, the app I selected has not been added to the list.
Any idea why this would start happening, and what I can do about it? Thanks.

Hi Ander,
Did you check the "Always use the selected program...." box to make it the default
program?

Hope this helps,

Yes, it's always selected. Even if it weren't, though, that wouldn't prevent me from
selecting an app to open the file (by adding it to the list). It won't even do that.

Ander,
You're right, it should have added it whether the box was checked or not.
Try selecting the program using Method Two in the tutorial to see if it will be added
to the "Open With" list afterwards. If it is already selected, try selecting something
else, then reselect it.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Nothing worked. Other things were going wrong, too---so I've just reinstalled Vista.
(A growing trend?) Thanks anyway.

LOL Ander,
It seems to be turning out to be the easier way anyway.

Have you tried shutting down and restarting your system?
