Lifecam VX300 microphone no sound

I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. During the transition from XP I found out that my trusty logitech webcam was not supported under Vista so I bought a Microsoft Lifecam VX 300 as it said on the box it was Vista compatible. However whilst the camera works fine the microphone seems not to. Everytime i try to change the gain setting using control panel the changes never stick. Also when using the lifecam audio settings wizard it allows me to change the gain setting but the wizard then hangs and i have to use the task manager to stop it running. This is really tedious. Does anyone have a clue how to cure this? Yours from sunny England, Steve PS I did remove the logitech software before installing the lifecam
