Noi Contact List in Windows Mail

I just helped my mother get a new computer for Mothers Day and she is ready to return
it because it has Vista and there is no contact list in Windows Mail. I have read
Microsoft's instructions for setting up contacts from the start menu, but it does
not explain how that list relates to Windows Mail. So, my question is when you are
in Windows Mail, how do you access your contacts in order to send an email? If this
is not possible (???) is there a way to load Outlook Express on to Vista, or is there
a free non-Microsoft email program that would work? Thanks.

Hi Jack,
When you are in a compose email message window, click on the "To:" button to select
from the contacts list.
This tutorial is for Contact Groups, but it will help give you a good idea how to
use normal Contacts too.

Thanks Shawn, but I had read your previously posted messages on this subject and
they really don't help. My Mom is 88 and does not deal well with a new way of doing
things. She wants to see a list of contacts in her mail program. Obviously Windows
Mail will not do that. Can I import Outlook Express or some non-Microsoft program
to help her? Thanks.

Jack,
"Outllook Express" will not work properky in Vista, but "Outlook 2003" and newer
will run fine in Vista.
You might give the free Windows Live Mail (WLM) a try to see how she likes it. It
has a easier to find Contacts link button on the left pane of the window. It supports
Pop3, IMAP, HTTP website (EX: Hotmail) email, and is a lot more stable. Plus, WLM
will minimize to a tray bar icon, checks spelling as you type messages, and has a
separate Inbox for each email account. WLM will automatically import Windows Mail
messages, accounts, and settings into it. Contacts will have to be manually imported
from within WLM. (Tools, Contacts, File, Import, Address book for current Windows
User.) To see the Menu bar, press ALT+M and check "Show all menus".

Thanks, Shawn. I assume you are referring to what used to be Hotmail. Is there
a way to place that on the desktop?

Jack,
Windows Live Mail (WLM) is a email program like Windows Mail except you get the bonus
of being able to use Hotmail with it in addition to your normal email. Once you install
it and run it, tell it to make itself the default email program when asked when you
first open WLM. (In Tools - Options for the default option) It will then replace
all of Windows Mail shortcuts with it's own shortcut.
You can still use Windows Mail also, if you like, with WLM to.

Try Thunderbird. I switched My Dad to it, and He didn't even notice. I think He still
thinks He is using Outlook Express.

Hope it works for you. I even disguised Thunderbird to look like OE, by changing
it's Icon and name. Did the same thing to Firefox, by making it look Like IE, and
then disguised IE to something nondescript, and disabled it so it wouldn't launch
in case He accidentally clicked on it. He used Firefox for 2 years thinking it was
Internet Explorer, before I finally told Him it was not IE. :)

Pretty Funny. I just downloaded Thunderbird, though, and cannot figure out how to
place a list of contacts on the main page, under the list of folders, like on OE.
I see an icon in the toolbar for an address book. Is that the only way to do it?

Sorry, but I don't really remember how the contact list looks like in OE, and don't
have Thunderbird installed on my own computer. I personally use Web mail. Click around
in Thunderbird for awhile see if you can't get it setup to Her liking. It is actually
a much safer email client then OE.

Thunderbird like Firefox has extensions. See if this extension is what may be a substitute.

If you look at the send and receive tab, the one right next to it is the contacts
tab. Click on it, it will open up and you add your contacts as you would normally
do. Vista takes a bit of getting use to. Play around with each program to get familiar
with it.
