Internet Explorer Not Working

I have recently purchased a laptop with Windows Vista, and it has been working fine
until a couple of days ago. I am able to access my email with no problem but Internet
Explorer does not connect to the Internet (it just says "connecting" but never does).
I have tried a System Restore, and have restarted in Safe Mode and tried to return
to the Last Good Configuration. Neither of those have helped. I have also run anti-virus
and spyware with no problems detected.
Any help most appreciated.

Something has changed the setting on your machine or installed new settings and/or
add-ons in Explorer.
First make sure that you have ONLY ONE FIREWALL running. That's a common problem.
People install a new Anti-Virus that has it's own firewall and it leaves MS firewall
running too.
Next, try turning any fire wall you have off.
Next, try turning your AV off.
If none of that works I am including a link to the MS Technet page that tells you
how 'Reset IE 7 and to understand some of the things going on there. Thee items usually
go most people going. Of course if you find that turning off an item like the fire
wall gets it going you must then ask what needs to be fixed there to let me run the
firewall of whatever was the offending device.

Thank you so much for your response. I have tried all of the things you suggested,
as well as other suggestions at MS, and I still receive the same message, i.e. "Internet
Explorer cannot display the webpage". Do you think I should try installing Firefox
(which I have never used) that it might be an alternative?
Thanx!

I would not and others would tell you yes. You have a connection problem and even
if Firefox got you connected, you would never know what happened, how to fix it,
or if it might come back in some other application. You shouldn't bandage a problem
but cure it. Otherwise you still have the problem.
On the other hand if you do install Firefox, you must realize that this is open architecture
software. That means any hacker on the planet can easily find holes in the program
(especially a "Web Browser") to gain access to anything and every thing you do on
the net. All you have to do is visit some of the hacking web sites and look at the
posts they make laughing at all the people that have gone to Firefox. Their comments
about hacking into it will scare your socks off.

Thank you Charlie. I will accept your advice and not install Firefox. But I am
still left the problem of not being able to access the internet on my laptop! I
have "googled" until I am blue, looking for possible solutions. Perhaps my best
bet would be to take the laptop to the puter doctor??? Any more suggestions? I
do appreciate your time on this one.

Assuming that you turned off the afore mentioned items and it still doesn't work
we need to look at details. What type of service, devices, company hooked up to,
everything you can think of.
Also Open Network Connections and what ever device you are using there. Click on
properties and you should see 'Connect Using' and your device in the window. Click
on configure. Then click on advanced. Look for anything that has "IPv6" in the line
and disable it. It will be years before you need IPv6 and that has been causing some
malfunctions.
Give me you data I will probably want more later.

Try turning off the phishing filter. I had the same problem and it worked for me.

Thanks Charlie,
I had to go out of town unexpectedly and have just returned, so haven't had a chance
to look at this issue again. I'll get back to you.
