Problems with Font sizes, Internet Printing and Desktop Wallpaper aps in Vista

I am setting up a new computer for my mother with Vista (I run XP on mine) and I am having problems with personalizing the desktop and internet printing. When I try to personalize the Desktop background, it will only permit me to install a solid color. I select wallpaper and click on a picture, but then it just reverts to a solid color. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Also, the display fonts on the desktop icons and in Windows Mail is really small. I have selected the largest font settings available, but it is still really too small for my mother to read. Finally, for the bonus question, I am not able to print a page from the internet on her HP Deskjet F380. I spoke with HP and they had me re-download their Smart Web Printing software, but it still does not work. I installed Firefox and I can print okay from there, as well as from the computer itself, but not IE. HP has been of no help. Any ideas out there? Thanks. Jack

For the desktop background. You need to make sure Your Display settings permit it.
At the same time you must have enough memory if you are trying to run the Aero Glass
feature. So go to Display settings first and you might get away with MED. 16 bit
I would say go for High 32 Bit. While playing in that area make sure your graphics
driver is up to date. Your mother probably would need Aero so I would turn it off
in 'Themes'. Click on Windows Vista or Windows classic and see if one of those will
get you going.
As for the fonts if 200%! isn't big enough you can select a different font. Some
fonts are bigger in just the way they are designed. That will take some searching
and experimentation. But usually 200% will get the attention of just about anyone.
You might want to try font smoothing as this can give a better definition to your
font.
The printing I will have to pass on for the most part. You can try to reset IE. GO
to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/ RESET. You might have to restart optional things
like a 3rd party tool bar and stuff like that. I do not encourage using firefox.
It is a garage door sized hole for hackers to get into your machine. This goes for
any "Open Architecture" software. It's like leaving the keys to your brand new Mercedes
in the ignition and the door unlocked.

Thanks. When you say 200% on the font size, all I see is regular and large, or something like that but no 200%. I will try a different font. I always go with Arial. Thanks for the Firefox info. I've never used it.

Where you see regualar and Large. Is there in the lower R. corner a button marked
Custom. Click it and you shall be enlightened! I hope it works out. I have to have
mine at 120% and I am still qualified to drive a SIMI! Of course they will let anyone
drive a big truck that's a big enough sucker to do it.
