I have never seen this issue before since I would not advocate the use of an external drive to hold the pagefile, mostly for the simple reason that it is too easily disconnected and doing so will crash your system. I think what might be happening is that Vista is closing down the usb interface before finishing with the pagefile and thus the system crashes, while XP behaves in a different way. By the way pagefile and readyboost are NOT the same thing as the latter one is kinda file caching mechanism. Using the second page file, however, for "load balancing" rocks, it really speeds up your system, and when the usb drive is removed the system just fails over to the boot drive (Drive C in my case).
