I am running windows vista home basic and for the last week I have been getting buffer overrun warnings and my taskbar and icons must reset for me to do anything....internet processes will not continue until this happens, programs freeze, and a system restore does not help, virus and spyware scans do not show anything...since I use a dell inspiron 1520 laptop a factory restore is difficult to accomplish as I do not have a CD, nor can I revert back to XP as vista was the OS when I purchased the laptop.... any help would be greatly appreciated I have run hijackthis and kept the log so as to post here if needed

This could either be hardware or software related, but in any case I would back up your data at this point. It doesn't sound like malware to me, but to make sure you could post at SpywareBeware. You have to register, but its free. Be sure to read the "pinned" posts at the top before doing anything with HijackThis. Is there anything relevant in your system event log ? In Device Manager are there any yellow exclamation marks beside items ? You have clearly been contemplating a reinstall of Vista. If you go down this course (remembering that you will lose all your data and any programs you have added since the PC was new) you should be able to use the in-built Dell PC Restore function if you don't have a Vista DVD. Your Dell manual is downloadable here. You will find the instructions you need on page 147.
