Everything I've ever deleted still shows up

Got the message that C: was getting full so I deleted a bunch of stuff, but it was
still showing up as full. So I did a file search for all .mp3s, .AVIs, etc. and a
ton of files showed up. Thing is, I deleted all of them at various points over the
past several months. It showed, for example, that filename.avi was on the desktop.
But it's not. (And I can't delete them from the search window. It keeps saying it
can't and asking if I want to try again.) They do still seem to be factoring into
the free space count.
Anyone ever have this problem before?

Incidentally, going through Disc Cleanup doesn't make any difference. If no one can
help, I'm going to reformat the drive and reinstall the software, which I'd like
to avoid.

It is possible that you have a corrupt Recycle Bin.
To re-build it, start Windows Explorer, "show hidden files" and "show system files".
In the root of C: find $recycle.bin and delete it - the Recycle Bin will be recreated
when you re-boot.
Then try deleting a file, emptying the Recycle Bin, and verifying that its truly
gone.
Good luck.

Also these things can show up because of shadow/restore points saved. The restore
points you can loose by just turning off system restore. I have had it take a couple
of days worth of normal rebooting and general daily work for them to totally eliminate
themselves. The shadow function I would have to study/refresh my mind on , but this
is more of an instantaneous storage and I don't think that is your problem and right
off the top of my head, I don't think it can be turned off.
Try turning the sys. restore off and giving it a day or two. Also have you done the
SP1 update and not dumped the backup files for that? That is somewhere around 30-60
meg. of backup files. A few months back I tried to remind everyone and they all laughed!
If you have a second drive try putting the sys restore on it rather than your primary.
Also there are ways to limit/control the size of the restore file. I seriously doubt
you have any real problem other than some cleanup. Also, do you have IE set to dump
the web files from it's saved folder?

Didn't work, I'm afraid.
You could, however, still be right. Since I can't delete anything properly, how can
I be sure I really deleted $recycle.bin?

Well, it was just an idea - sorry it didn't work.
I suppose you could boot to a command prompt and try deleting it from there ?
If the "real" problem is corruption of the delete function then you may well need
a re-install to fix that corruption :-((
