Gmail question

I know this is not an OS question, but hope someone can answer this for me.

I use Gmail & have been getting messages in my Spam folder from time to time stating they are from Me; I know for a fact they are not & have opened a few to check them out. Most are about sexual vitamins & growth pills, others about loans, govm't paydays, military info, etc.

I found out this is due to 1 or more people 'spoofing' my addy, my q is this: should I cancel the accout & perhaps create a new one, does the person/people who've done this actually have access to my account & any email addy's I have stored w/in, & how much do I need to worry about this (can my identity be messed with/stolen this way)?

Creating a new account probably would only give them another address to send to.
They have software that automatically generates the addresses. I have a couple that
use very cryptic names in the addresses like an advanced password and they got those
right away. As far as having any access to your machine. The worst they can do at
this time is insert code that executes when you open the mail. This can do many things
such as inform them that you are indeed a real person at this address, to executing
a virus. THis is why we have virus detection.
I recommend that you have one or more addresses that you only use for family and
work. IN those you delete ANYTHING that comes for other than known sources. Then
you can have some open addresses that you might be a little more adventurous in your
usage. I have a couple that I use for any sites that demand such in order to use
them. Don't get too carried away, because you don't want to be checking mail ALL
DAY LONG.

So I shouldn't worry too much about it? Can whoever is doing this see the addy's I have listed in My Contacts?

Highly unlikely. I can't say what might be invented this afternoon, but at this point
in time most of the viral stuff can only resend either itself or some other content
to any addy listing you have. MS and most good Viral Software has prevention built
in preventing that if engaged. Actually a good 'Responsible' home user is safer than
a corporate user as their administrators are most commonly 6 to 12 months behind
on updates and fixes for these problems and attacks. Most viral attacks are actually
known about and cured long before that actual virus ever gets into the wild.
