sorry i forgot to mention..I looked in windows event viewer to see if it recorded
the crashes, and it did, and the were all event 1000, application errors. all of
them say "faulting application [app name here] version [x], timestamp [x], faulting
module unknown or faulting module and [module name]. this is the message for ever
crash I have encountered...maybe this info will help.

Sounds like a ordinary memory failure. Find yourself a memory diagnostic program
(many good free ones around) and test your memory thoroughly. You want software that
will stress your memory. It is also better to use software that will do this in a
DOS state without going through a normal boot-up. Another way is, if you have more
than one stick of memory (a probability) you can try to remove 1 stick at a time.
Do this for each stick and then test to see if the problem goes away. Check you manual
or manufacturer site for instructions on particular requirements of filling the memory
slots. Many motherboards now a days require that certain memory slots be filled first
over others.
