The probable losses are many, but in most cases, are insignificant to an "experienced"
user. First as long as you are booting OK and it finds your user profile OK. The
effect should be minimal. THat is not saying something couldn't pop up and cause
a program failure or worse. First, things that could be affected are; your HD index
(which a lot of Vista users hate), Sync center, automatically assigning a folder
for a program install, Finding existing program info (though that should be well
detailed in the reg.), but watch for missing features or accessories, possibly some
programs that do not install Via the registry. It could cause lost D/Ls or Mail.
If you have any OLD experience with the DOS 'Path' statement, you can start to imagine
how this works in Vista. Most of that is just guessing, but it should give you something
to keep in mind when this do not work correctly. I would document this and have it
hand to compare should something go astray. I'm not going to change mine to find
out what you might look forward to!
I'm curious why you don't want ANYTHNG for a home page if it's not prying too much?
Are you wanting just a blank white (any colour as far as that goes) page? You could
create a generic empty web page, name it and save it to your HD then use it as a
home page. Yes your home page can be any HTML code stored anywhere. The reason that
IE and Explorer are tied to Windows so tightly is that early on they actually planned
on having a web site for a desk top for most users. Many offices do that with their
company site. That is why you can search your HD from the Search window and address
line! That may be a little more stable and less problematic.

I just updated my "Spot MAU" software and noticed the 'Home Page' setting in it.
Do you possibly have a utility of similar content that is over riding you changes?

Actually i like using Yahoo as my home page ... this silly thing keeps changing that
to MSN & Bing each time I shut down. Funny it doesn't change on restart ???

If it doesn't change on a restart I would say you have a Very large chance it is
a hijacker and it will continue till removed.You seem to know a little about computers
and how to interpret at least some things, so I am going to give same suggestions
that if you are not careful you can delete a lot of needed stuff and get in trouble,
but...
Try Hijack this, it is free on-line. Study what you are looking at and see what line
items are for. Like items that start with the '04' designation are startup programs.
Ignore anything that says 'file missing', unless you know for sure it is a deleted
program or something of that nature. You may find you trigger in there. If so note
where it resides and go after it. Also many AV and mal-ware vendors have an on-line
check for viral content and sometimes for specific hijackers. The one on you machine
can't fool the on-line check as their program does not reside on your machine. DO
that from safe mode with internet startup.
