at starting, windows boots up but once it gets to "Log in", and after putting in the username, the screen goes blank/black, save for the mouse cursor. i can get to task manager etc via cntrl>alt>del and then choosing the option task manager, so i suspect it's not the monitor. i've also tried starting bin secure mode, without any joy. help!?!

I believe it is time to use the restore disk or restore partition on the hard drive.
If you can't boot into 'Safe Mode' you can try the BCD boot repair one you enter
the restoration process, but I seriously doubt that it will fix it. Check out he
link for BCD restoration instructions.

If that doesn't work then you will have to completely re-install Vista.
