Removing USB Stick Causes BSOD

I just received a new HP HDX 18t laptop with Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I was transferring files from my old laptop using a Memorex 2GB TravelDrive. This process was going very well yesterday - in fact, I had no trouble with inserting the stick, and then removing it without "safely" removing it. Today, however, when I remove the stick (safely or not) I get a BSOD. I'm new to Vista, and if this were XP I think I'd have a better time looking into it. But I have no clue how to even track down what's going on.

If you received any updates from Microsoft in the last two days, seriously look at removing KB973879 from your system. Everything was fine with my machine, received the update this afternoon, and then removing any USB device would cause BSOD. After removing this "update", things are again fine. See http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/244106-blue-screen-when-unplugging-usb-mouse.html But it is really any USB, not just a mouse.

Thanks for the heads-up, Kevin. I spent some time on chat with an HP tech last night and he confirmed what you're reporting. He suggested not performing any updates for the next 24-48 hrs. Thanks!

I had this problem and using your advice uninstalled the referenced update. It fixed it for me also, thanks very much for the time saving post. So, the question now is do we have to suspect Microsofts updates of causing more problems than they fix? Should I quit accepting updates? So far Vista has been the most troublesome product I have ever used!! I will buy an Apple next.

lol, if you buy a Mac, you must be loaded with money. I pondered switching over to a Mac early this year and did a comparison of performance and hardware, I would spend almost twice as much to get the same specs on a Mac than a PC. Minus this one update, I haven't had a single issue with their updates for longer than I can remember and as a software developer, that is quite amazing considering how often Microsoft releases updates. Anyway, do as you wish Steve. :)

Thanks for the additional info. I run my own consulting business and bill by the hour. The non-billable hours I've spent 'converting' to Vista on my new Dell could have paid for an iMac. Of coarse a lot of it is probably my own ineptitude. May have similar issues on the Mac (-:
