I recently tried to install windows vista updates on a dell 1525 laptop. While it was downloading the updates it froze up and crashed vista. It is a new install of Windows vista home basic. (Windows and hardware drivers). I managed to restart the computer, but when I went to download the updates, same thing again. Any thoughts on why this is happening? The firewall is set to accept the updates. A note on the hardware, 1.8Ghz Celeron chip, 3GB Ram, 320GB HDD. All drivers installed.

Solution #1: Stop trying to install updates....

(Possible) Solution #2 may be found here:

(Possible) Solution #3 may be found here, a source you have found on your own: Google
"vista update problems".

Thanks John, the computer is running fine without the updates.

Be advised that, although the computer may appear to be working fine, that may not
necessarily be the case, due to security problems and other assorted maladies inherent
in Vista (and other OS products as well.)

You may, for example, find that certain programs will not update unless specific
Vista updates have been installed, you may find your computer subject to virus and
trojan attacks, and so forth and so on (and on and on and on...).

I realize that there are users who never install updates, and seem, somehow, to manage
quite well. I also know that there have been instances of installed Vista updates
that have themselves, created problems.

In short, I think it is up to you as to how you decide to proceed, leaving things
as they are or figuring out (and, perhaps, even solving) the problem(s).

De duobus malis, minus est semper eligendum - Of two evils, the lesser must
always be chosen (Thomas a Kempis) [No, I don't know which is the lesser!]
