Blue screen after loading profile

On starting up my Vista laptop and logging in, my desktop and taskbar fail to show
up. All I get is a blue background and a mouse pointer. Soon after, I get a BSOD
with STOP error 0x0000008E. This all started after I installed the latest updates
with Windows Update.

Usual advice: Google the error, adding "vista" to the search entry to limit the returned
link numbers.

One site recommended system restore, but for some reason safe mode will not load.

I suspect that that is not good....
Not a problem I recall seeing anything about. A quick Google for "vista safe mode
won't load" did turn up some possible links; the only one I looked at was this one:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-to-do-if-Windows-wont-start-correctly
Perhaps something there will help you.
