Cookies created from Ads/Links?

Do ads, banners, and links create cookies? For example, if I visit a site and there
is a banner ad for Amazon.com or eBay.com on the page, will I have a cookie created
by those sites as well as the site I'm on at that time?

Is there any reason for a cookie to be created for a site that you didn't actually
load or view?

Thanks.

Note: this applies to the big names that run standard banner ads, the ones that hijack
your computer are a different matter and should be obliterated on site.

You do load/view part of it, the adds themselves, they use the cookies for statistics
and such. Some panic over it and while it is a good idea to clear cookies out every
now and then it is not a huge deal. Before you panic about them stealing your identity
remember the big name advertisers are not going to do something that will get them
sued off the internet nor are they interested in targeting a single person, it is
just data collection.

I'm not really thinking about it in terms of a security risk but more just wondering
how some of the cookies I have on my PC were created.

There seem to be some cookies pointing to sites that I didn't visit so I was wondering
if a site I did visit has an ad or banner for another site would there be a cookie
created for that ad or banner, even if I didn't visit the advertisted site???

Short answer, yes a banner add or element can create a cookie. If your browser accesses
their site for any content they can send a cookie back.
