Office 2007 Uninstall/Reinstall Problems

I tried uninstalling Office 2007 through the "Programs and Features" window of the
Control Panel so that I could reinstall only the features I needed (and reclaim some
hard drive space). Not only did the uninstall fail but so did the reinstall (to
repair the damage that I did) and I am unable to open any Word or Excel files.
When I try to open Word or Excel I get a message stating "This update package could
not be opened. Verify that the update package exists and that you can access it,
or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer
update package."
HELP!!!

I understand this should be a Vista problem but have you tried Woody's lounge? which
is a site devoted to MS Office related problems, the uninstall/reinstall problem
you have may be a fault with Office not Vista.

An old XP trick you can try is running the installer in compatibility mode for an
older OS, only worked in rare cases but worth a try. Also make sure you are running
it with full administrative power.
