Windows shuts down when I hold the left-click.

I have a problem where Windows XP shuts down without warning. I've noticed it happens when I use the lasso tool on Illustrator and when I use Windows Movie Maker. I think it has something to do with clicking and holding the mouse - that's what seems to trigger it. Any prolonged holding of the left-click seems to generate some kind of power surge, and then everything shuts down. Any reason why this would happen? Can I change the power settings to prevent this or am I screwed?

Try a different mouse for starters. Mice can use PS2 or USB to connect, if possible
get one of the other type than you already have.

My mouse is an hp that came with my computer, it's almost brand new. It's a USB. What is a PS2 connection?

It being new does not rule out a defect, a major electrical fault would show up early.
A PS2 port is round port on the back of the PC, probably marked as green with a second
one for the keyboard (color varies but purple or orange normally.) if the spare mouse
you find in a PS2 make sure to shut the computer down before you connect it.
