I know this sounds a pain, but XP is sometimes a pain. I have 2600 Copr final.
To keep it simple. Reformat the drive. Install W98/ME or something. Load and setup
all your drivers, hardware, etc, since XP will later take those settings when it
installs. It seems simplier to do this than to take time making boot disks. Win
ME and 89 almost virtually self install.
Then install XP, and use "upgrade." Once that is installed, make sure all hardware
is setup correctly, use norton ghost and mirror (backup) your main hard drive to
a secondary hard drive that had NO BOOTABLE OS on it, and then DISCONNECT it from
your system.
MS has a paper out on XP re-assigning/re-lettering hardware, and that can and does
cause boot drives and other hardware to be reassigned, corrupting the boot sector
and confusing your system.. and loosing the ability to boot from that initial boot
disk, though the progrmas etc are still there.
Once you mirror your primary hd and have a backup copy of your harddrive, remove
your secondary backup drive and leave it off unless you need to restore your main
drive, via Ghost or the like/
Hope this helps,
Spanky
