removing hidden NIC cards?

The original NIC (linksys) was pulled out of the machine without having the drivers uninstalled first. A new NIC (3com) was put in and drivers were installed. When the IP is assigned to this NIC - a warning message occurs stating that the IP is currently bound to another NIC (Linksys), but that connection is not being shown because it is not phsically in the system. It doesn't exixt in device manager. Anyone know of a more elegant solution rather than putting the old nic in, uninstalling it and then removing it?
