After several painstaking hours of trying to figure this out myself, I gave in and
searched on the web. This is what I found:
First, make a backup copy of "sysoc.inf" (c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf) in case you screw
up. Open the Sysoc.inf file with notepad. Each line of text in the file represents
a component that can be displayed in the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog (this
can be accessed from Add/Remove Programs and clicking on the Add/Remove Windows Components
button on left hand side). Delete the word HIDE for any component that you want to
see in the dialog (DO NOT DELETE THE COMMAS!). Save the Sysoc.inf file and you should
be able to see Windows Messenger the next time you bring it up.
This EXTRAORDINARILY beautiful process was discovered on a Windows XP tips and tricks
page, URL: http://www.dpdl07125.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/xp_tips_and_tricks.htm
It worked for me! :O)
>MS doesn't make this an easy task to figure out.
Most certainly true - they claim that it is part of the operating system. I emailed
tech support for Sony (my pc is a VAIO) and Microsoft and was told it's not possible.
Damn liars.
