I've been using XP for a couple of months now (my company is in bed with MS). Before
that, I used 2000 since is was first released. Here are some anoyances I have with
XP:
1. If you try to shut the system down while outlook XP is still running, it complains
and makes you close it manually.
2. Quite frequently, my system slows to a crawl. I check the taskman and EXPLORER.EXE
is taking 99% CPU time. I have to kill it, then file->run->explorer. Why this happens,
who knows?
3. Video (AVI, MPEG, etc.) sucks. I'm comparing this on the same system with XP
vs. 2000. 2000's performance was WAY better. I can't even go full screen and get
better than 2fps. Granted, I have an old ATI rage 128 card, but come on. Even a
100MHz pentium can play MPEGs full screen.
4. Software incompatibility. win2k DVD software won't work on XP. Some CD burning
software won't work on XP (XP's CD software sucks, BTW). Most drivers need to be
upgraded (understandable). Same kernel, same API (with additions). Why should I
have to upgrade?
Win2k was pretty stable. XP is pretty stable. Neither are rock solid. XP HAS crashed
on me three times. Interesting thing is, it will tell you that the system needs
to be rebooted and then give you a countdown until it does automatically. One of
the crashes was a complete lockup (mouse, numlock don't work, system frozen, etc.)
So, no. XP is not crash proof.
I like the new interface (with a few changes from the defaults.)
