goes straight to sleep on bootup!

installed winXP pro - ran for a few days - then it started going into sleep mode
at bootup. 3 restarts later it'll boot up.
Yesterday, i lost my bios settings all together and the system wouldnt boot at all
- boot record is found but - error msg "NTLDR NOT FOUND"
I'm currently in the middle of re-installing!
What the hell is this?
Have run my system on Win98 and ME perfectly for 2 years!
