Mystery Device in Manager

Windows XP upgrade from Windows Me I have a yellow question mark in my Device Manager listed as "Unsupported Device". When I try to uninstall the device and scan for devices, it shows that it is a "Unknown Device". No drivers are installed for the device. The mystery device was discovered after I noticed a game stuttering - after installing a new soundcard. Soundcard manufactuer suggested that it was due to a hardware conflict. Since that time I have removed the sound card, all periferrals, even the mouse and keyboard, one by one to try to find the mystery device. It shows up again after every reboot - no matter what I remove from the system. I have already updated all drivers for Windows XP. How can I find out what the device is?
