I've had the same problem. In my copy of WinXP Home, I had to enable Advanced Power
Management (APM) in Control Panel.
Go to Start --> Control Panel
Click on "Switch to Classic View" in the sidebar.
Double-click on the Power Options icon.
Click on the APM tab and enable APM support. If the tab isn't there, you need to
enable APM in your BIOS (varies for different computers).
If all goes well, reboot and your system should shut down automatically. If, like
mine, the machine reboots instead, consider it (pushing the power button) a small
price to pay for using an NT-based O/S. Consider never shutting off the computer
too, as NT-based O/S's shouldn't need to shut down that often.
