I'm not one of those defrag nitpicky people.
I upgraded XP over an old winME installation earlier and though it ran pretty well
I had some errors. For unimportant reasons, I later formatted, installed ME and
then upgraded immediately to XP. This installation boots up very quickly (tho not
as fast as ME) and is pretty darn stable. I still get some of the same errors I
got during ME (from unreal tournament), but on the whole things run faster and more
stable under XP. I've heard lots of scary stories about people having trouble after
upgrading non-clean installations. I'd really suggest a backup and format if you're
gonna install XP. It takes an extra afternoon (depending on how many programs you
wanna reinstall), but your system will be much cleaner and more sleek.
