modem will not stop trying to connect

where is the box i need to check that will stop my computer from trying to constantly
connect to my IP. I disconnect to make a call and seconds later it is reconnecting.
I diconnect to go home, and i come in the morning to find my computer logged on.
My laptop, which i rarely connect to the internet, contantly is showing "port not
open or availalble" message. I close it out and moments later it trying to connect
again.....its dring me crazy.....
