standby and hibernation settings

My question deals with screensavers and the standby,monitor off and hibernation settings. No matter what time settings I set them to the screensavers do not work properly... i.e. the screensaver comes and on and stays on forever or the screensaver does not come on and the system goes directly into standby. I never had this problem with '98 but since I upgraded to XP what a pain. Any suggestions as to what the settings should be at??
