Here's what you have to do.

You'll have to reinstall XP. Boot from your XP CD and press a key to start the
installation process. When it brings up the blue scree and says to press F6 to load
other drivers, press F5. It will then allow you to choose what type of system you
have. Scroll up to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC. Continue
with the installation (hopefully it won't take as long as a new installation). You
should now have APM detected. This is also necessary for Windows 2000.

Alternately, if you don't want to/cannot reinstall, then try going into Device
Manager (right-click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager). Under Computer,
bring up the properties page of the item there (probably Standard PC) by double clicking
it or selecting it and click the properties button. Now in the Driver tab, select
Update Driver, then select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".
Click Next. Select "Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install." Now you should
have a list of Models. You may have to uncheck "Show compatible hardware". Now select
"Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC" and click Next. Continue and
you should have it working. This method did not work very well in Windows 2000 which
is why I recommend the reinstall method, but may work in XP.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of motherboard do you have? I had the same problem
with my ASUS P5A.
