My modem did pretty much the same thing after installing XP. Try reducing the speed
buffers for transmit and recieve. Go to Control Panel and Click on Phone and Modem
options. Click on the Modems Tab, highlight your modem and click Properties. Click
on the Advanced Tab and Click on Advanced Port Settings. Play with the slider bars
for transmit and recieve untill (hopefully) you can get a reliable connection.
