For about a week now I've been reading of the various problems folks have been having
with XP. While I won't minimize the seriousness of some of these problems, this
hasn't been my experience.
I did an upgrade of XP-Pro over Millennium (AMD-500, ASUS MB) and all my stuff worked
after the upgrade (except I did uninstall Nortons and Roxio, then reinstalled them).
I then did a reformat of a P-166 system (74 mb ram), and did a clean install of XP
-- worked fine!
I know that I probably have better patience than many, but the upgrade and clean
install were just really smooth for me.
Having used DOS, Win3.1, Win95, Win98, Mill, and MVC mainframe programming, I'm predisposed
to expect wrinkles, but I find no particular annoyances with XP.
I would be suspicious of new machines with XP preloaded, because I don't trust other
people's images, and there is an adjustment required when migrating legacy components
and apps, but these can be worked through.
Anyway, those of you who are frustrated with XP in some way or another, HANG IN THERE!
