Lost XP startup/shutdown/logon/logoff sounds Thursday, November 22, 2001 at 5:54 am Windows XP Annoyances Discussion Forum Posted by jsshackel (31 messages posted) After installing WinXP and fiddling with customizations, I downloaded and am using a logon screen customizing freeware utility named 'XP LogonUI', along with several custom logon screens (since the default blue is so crappy). It works great, only I noticed sometime after using it that I had lost the four XP event sounds related to starting up and shutting down (startup/shutdown/logon/logoff). All other event sounds execute normally. The sounds are still associated with these four events when checked in the sound control event sound selection area. The selected ones will also play okay when played using Media Player or Sound Recorder -- don't seem to be damaged. Other event sounds won't execute either for the four startup/shutdown events if they are selected (XP Exclamation, Error, etc.), so it doesn't seem related to the four particular wav files but rather an execution problem. All other event sounds execute normally for the associated Windows events. I'm thinking that the problem is related to the XP LogonUI utility and changing the logon/logoff screen to custom ones. Used another great utility named 'Resource Hacker' (highly recommended for advanced tweakers) to check out the various custom 'logonui.exe' files looking for a reference to firing up event sounds, but see none. (This utility is great, however, for advanced changing of wording in custom logon screens.) Also checked the 'logonui.exe' file in Windows/System32 but also see no reference to initiating an event sound. Has anyone else used 'XP LogonUI' and had the same problem with losing the sounds? Does anyone know what system file or what else "tells" the startup/shutdown/logon/logoff event sounds to play? It's a small annoyance, but I never let Win98 whip me and I have to solve this one.
