If you're referring to a transparent background for desktop icon text, or in other
words no colored block around the text, then go to Start/Control Panel (switch to
'Classic View' left-hand side if not already set)/System/Advanced/Performance,Settings/Visual
Effects. Scroll to bottom of menu and check 'use drop shadows for icon labels on
the desktop'. Voila. (You can also change animations and effects here, but the more
effects the slower the response. It's a balance between purty graphics and speed
depending on system speed. Search for and download Microsoft Powertoys for XP to
get TweakUI for XP and run it for even more customization control!)
