Follow-up from original posting by jsshackel: problem solved by a member at another XP forum site. If anyone else XPperiences this problem --- when using MS TweakUI utility (part of MS Powertoys for WinXP) and you uncheck the box for "beep on errors" under the "General" category, say goodbye to startup/shutdown/logon/logoff event sounds. Recheck the box to get 'em back. 'Beep on errors' and startup sounds? Typical MS goofiness. Check out the Forum at http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/ for another good info and troubleshooting site.
